TAXONOMY

Scientists estimate there are over 8 million species of living organisms in the world today. But we only know about 2 million of them. That means most living organisms have not even been discovered yet!

How do scientists organize the diversity of life that exists on Earth? How do we know that a plant is not an animal? And what makes an animal an animal? How do various species relate to each other? Can Taxonomy give us clues to an animal's behavior? Taxonomy gives us the answers.

The second in the Z3 Fundamentals series, this free talk explores the 7 layers used in Taxonomy to name, describe and classify living organisms. You might say Taxonomy is similar to a Family Tree – foundational, rooted in the past but with application in the present. Learn how Taxonomy impacts zoology and helps us better understand the living organisms we are observing today.
